Hanspun Histories -
Cotton, Silk, Wool, and Jute
Fall 2024
Handspun Histories explored India’s textile heritage through the stories of four iconic fibers —cotton, silk, wool, and jute. These materials, deeply intertwined with India’s cultural and economic fabric, have shaped the nation’s identity for thousands of years, serving as a testament to the skill, creativity, and labor of its artisans.
From the cultivation of cotton and rearing of silkworms to the weaving of wool and the crafting of jute, each step of production requires a mastery honed over generations. The painstaking handiwork—spinning, dyeing, weaving—brings to life a material history essential to daily life and central to India’s artistic and cultural narrative.
In celebrating these fibers, we highlight India’s enduring legacy to handmade goods, a tradition that places the country among the world’s great ancient cultures. Cotton, once at the heart of revolutionary change; silk, a symbol of luxury and grandeur; wool, a source of warmth and comfort; and jute, the humble yet essential golden fiber—each plays a pivotal role in the global textile story.
Tales in Textiles- Dyeing, Embroidery, Printing, & Weaving
Spring 2025
Tales in Textiles was an invitation beyond the fabric—to discover the layered histories, lived experiences, and evolving narratives that continue to shape the artistry of Indian textiles today. This exhibition highlighted the intricate craftsmanship passed down through generations, connecting us to the traditions flourishing across India’s many states.
From the vibrant handlooms of Gujarat to the luxurious silks of Varanasi, from the delicate embroidery of Kashmir to the bold block prints of Rajasthan, each region preserves a legacy intricately woven with its history, rituals, and landscapes.
Through dying, embroidery, printing and weaving, this exhibition traced how textile traditions serve as storytellers—echoing the past while threading new meanings into India’s contemporary cultural fabric.
Motifs are at the heart of this storytelling. Whether the paisley (ambi), sacred florals, or geometric symmetry, these symbols have journeyed through time, carrying histories of migration, devotion, and resistance.
